EcoFutures Festival

Queer, Feminist and Decolonial Responses to Ecological & Environmental Changes

7th April 2019

EcoFutures is a Neo-eco-activist festival in East London bought together by over 70 artists, activists and theorists from all over the world. Through cultural experimentation and discussion, urgent environmental and ecological issues such as climate change; extinction; pollution; health; and sustainability are explored through an intersectional, feminist and queer lens.

‘Suit your Desires’ was a ritual response to EcoFutures London, facilitated during the peak of the Extinction Rebellion movement when London was electric with ecoactivist synergy. Through the domme-sub ritual of BDSM performance, ’Suit your Desires’ offered a safe space for marginalised queer communities to catharsise their frustrations towards the unjust power dynamic of predominantly white cis-male CEOs perpetrating ecocide.

Presenting themselves as domme-priestess-anima archetypes, the performers invited members of the audience up on stage to vent their emotions in anyway way they see fit at the ‘subs in suits’ who represented the collective CEO archetype. The performance aimed to facilitate the healing properties of collective ritual so that the community might be able to combat ecocide more efficiently once they experience a reversal of the power dynamics.

EcoFutures channeled many conversations in its 2 week takeover of the city; ‘ecological disasters and their impact on climate refugees; plastic/toxic waste and the contamination of aquatic and human bodies; the relationship between increasing air toxicity and human and animal diseases; high-speed capitalist consumption and the ungovernable production of trash and techno-waste; from neo-colonialist soil exploitations to indigenous land reclamations and green economies; the rise of temperature and sea levels and their direct effects on the environment, with a focus on the Majority World.’
